Art Gallery

The Breezeway Art Gallery is very proud to present two area artists, Katharine Miles and Lillian Vercoe. Katherine was born and raised in Simcoe, Norfolk County and taught art in Brantford where she presently resides. Lillian has had a longer journey, emigrating to Canada from England, living for years in Dunnville and Hagersville in Haldimand County before finally settling in Port Dover, Norfolk County. Each works primarily in water colour and favours the mid-size painting. Their work reflects the unique perspective each brings to the world around them.

The Artists in Their Own Words

Katherine Miles
Painting is most satisfying. As a painter, you view the world differently. You see more shades and colours, and every vista becomes a potential painting. I have wanted to paint most of my life and now have been able to make my dream a reality…The subject matters I enjoy are wide. While I do like floral work, old buildings and landscapes are also of interest. I try to focus on composition…looking at things from a different perspective whenever possible.

Lillian Vercoe
Art has been a part of my life as long as I can remember, sketching from record album covers or on a bus. I sometime would be so pleased with my effort, I would show my Dad, and he would always say, “Is it original? If it’s not, then it’s no good”. Over the years, I have tried many mediums, self taught. Recently I went to the Dundas School of Art and was taught by William Biddle, whom I think is an excellent instructor. During that time I was awarded several first place prizes for paintings at the Caledonia and Simcoe Fairs. Since then, I have continued to paint and am now teaching lessons.
